The First One

Hi! Welcome to Beginner Focused, our shiny new newsletter, written by Jeff Cohen and me – Brian Eng.

Although neither of us is a full-time educator – Jeff is a (part-time) professor of computer science at The University of Chicago and I’m adjunct faculty at Northwestern’s Kellogg – we really just enjoy sharing our knowledge and love for software development with those just jumping in for the first time.

We’ve been pro software developers for a long time. Like, since the 20th century. We’ve seen a lot of technology trends come and go, and lot of people try to enter the field – and the successes and failures that have gone along with that. We’ve got a couple of lifetimes of experiences and learning material, and we’re eager to share.

Why are you contacting me?

You’re on this list because you have been a student, workshop attendee, or otherwise have been in contact with either Jeff or me in the past, and we thought you’d be interested in hearing from us. If you are not interested, no worries! You can unsubscribe below.

What can I expect from Beginner Focused?

A couple of bite-sized articles per month, for the time being, mostly centered around helping early-career software developers level up. This means tidbits about ramping up your skills (dev skills as well as business/soft skills), real-world case studies from the field, career advice, and sometimes just general nerdery.

As Jeff likes to say, just try it. At a minimum, you’ll be mildly entertained by all the bad jokes.

Oh, and if you do find yourself enjoying our posts, please do share, using the link below!
